Often, a parrot is surrendered because an owner feels as if they have no other choice, Many parrot-related problems are solvable though! We may be able to help you find alternatives to surrendering your beloved bird. Whether its behavioral problems, a housing issue, or other hurdles in life, we're here to help and advise you. Send us an email or facebook message to discuss your situation.
There may be special circumstances that require you to give up your parrot regardless of advice. Please be sure to have exhausted all other possibilities before giving up your bird. Many issues can be resolved with the help of the bird-owning community and the right information, and we would be happy to guide you in the right direction. When surrendering your bird to Rio's Roost or any other organization, be sure to consider the comfort of your feathered friend and which situation best suits their needs.
For many birds, being brought to a facility with many animals and strangers, new routines, and lots of noise can be stressful compared to the environment they are used to at home. For this reason, shelters and rescue facilities should be used as a last resort.
Nobody knows your pet better than you- you know their likes and dislikes, temperament, and personality, making you the most likely person to find a long-term, successful home compared to anyone else. Close family or friends who know your parrot well may be willing to adopt your bird. You can continue to visit with your pet to ensure they don't feel abandoned, you don't lose your connection, and you can rest easy knowing they're being cared for. Be extremely careful handing your bird over to strangers online or people you don't know. Be sure to ask identifying questions that ensure the home is a proper placement- such as if they have other pets, how much time they have to spend with the bird, their experience with birds, and more. Check your references to ensure the person is a responsible and reliable owner, and keep in touch in the event that they can no longer keep the bird. By making a determined effort to rehome your parrot, not only will you be giving them a better future, but you will be creating a better future for another bird in need by leaving an open spot at the Roost.
Complete the surrender form listed below and return it to Rio's Roost by email. The legal guardian of the animal must fill out the form.
After reading your submitted form, we will contact you to discuss the next steps and any further questions regarding your bird.
Upon speaking with you in depth, we will decide upon the best placement for your bird and place them in their temporary or permanent home.
As much as we would like to help every bird who comes our way, Rio's Roost functions off of limited space. We understand sometimes it may be necessary to give up your bird and we will do our very best to find them a forever home. However, understand that not all surrender forms will be accepted, as we must save room when nearing full capacity for birds in critical condition.
When surrendering a bird to Rio's Roost, legal ownership and responsibility for your animal is transferred to us. We take your parrot's well-being very seriously and have a compassionate, loving team of volunteers who will provide your bird with care and enrichment. Once your bird has completed the surrendering process, they may not be returned to you and Rio's Roost will have complete say over their future placement.
Birds who fit into our ambassador programs, are of ill health, or are elderly may be selected to become a permanent resident. Permanent residents are provided top-notch care, routine veterinary care when necessary, and daily socialization as a part of our family. Understand that your bird may not fit our standards for safe and successful rehoming.
Rio's Roost does not sell birds for profit, however, we may ask an adoption fee that corresponds with the money spent on veterinary care, food, housing, and other supplies. We do not advertise the adoption fee per bird as each fee is unique to the needs of the parrot in question. All money made from adoption fees is circulated back into our system to house, feed, and care for a new generation of birds.
