Many of the parrots who pass through Rio's Roost end up clicking with our feathered family- be it because we believe their best opportunity for a fulfilling life is at one final destination, or because they fit into our ambassador program. Our permanent flock is always growing and changing as birds come and go, but we are still oh so excited to share them with you!
Chico was Rio's Roost's first medium parrot alongside Bean the orange wing! He is quite the talker and will almost certainly ask you for a cookie upon your arrival. His favorite toy in the world is a plain old box, even better if he can climb inside of it!
"Hello there!" is just one of Mimi's many phrases she loves to shout! Mimi is at least 31 years old, but will cry and squeal just like a baby to get your attention. She is always down for a good nutriberry and whatever else you've got on your plate!- unless, of course, you've got something healthy.
Phoebe is one big embodiment of amazon sass! Just like Mimi, Phoebe loves to talk and ask questions, especially "whatcha doin?" Don't be fooled though!- behind that sweet face lies quite the noisy night-time honker.
Jasper is Rio's Roost's number one ambassador! He loves all sorts of people and places, whether he be harnessed or naked. He has one bum foot, but don't be fooled!- he gets along just as good as everybody else. Jasper is currently attending college in Gainesville, but stops by Tallahassee every Winter and Summer.
Though not exactly a 'big bird' in build, Rio's attitude makes up for what he lacks in size! Rio has been a part of the Roost family since 2011, all the way back when he was just a baby! He is the king of our feathered jungle, demanding his morning raisin and group scream session.
Though not as rowdy as our other zons, Penelope is certainly a recognizable member of the family flock with her all too popular vampire pose. Penelope is a quiet girl still learning to love people, though when food is abound she isn't afraid to share her voice!
As sweet as he may seem, don't let your guard down when this big guy says "I love you"! Shamrock is quite the 51 year old ham with his many phrases and silly dances, but this old beak can still deliver quite the bite! Shamrock is in love with Mimi and endlessly vies for her affection- although she is yet to reciprocate.
Sweet little Pete is Rio's up and coming right hand man. Whenever in the driveway, expect to hear this guy announcing your arrival! Nothing makes Pete happy quite like getting to taste the morning vegetables and pick out his very own cashew from the nut bucket.
Each and every one of these little guys has a name! Just send us a picture of your budgie or cockatiel of interest and we can tell you their story!
Our little bird flock live freely in an aviary room specially designed to cater to their needs and give them the closest we can get to a natural life indoors. In the works for the summer of 2023, the Roost aims to build an outdoor aviary to give our little crew a more exciting life outside.
Though our budgies are not tame, they are happy having one another to play and interact with without the worries of stalking predators or other outside dangers. Rio's Roost provides every budgie and cockatiel who passes through our doors with the once in a life time chance to live as though they were wild, with the added bonus of catered meals!
One of the sad realities of the work we do is that there comes a time in every bird's life when we must say goodbye, and give them room to cross over the rainbow bridge. For many of our permanent residents, that time is sooner rather than later- those who we keep because they are ill or elderly use our facility as their final destination after a long road of life. Regardless of why a bird passes, or how long we had them, Rio's Roost mourns their loss and their memory all the same, but wishes to continue on their legacy through their photos and likeness which made so many happy in life.
This section is dedicated to those who are no longer with us physically, but who continue to watch over our living flock with open wings.
